Micklefield Community Centre is the heart of the village — a warm space run by local people, for local people, bringing everyone together under one roof, from clubs to celebrations.
Our History
Our Story
It all began in the summer of 1977, when residents gathered to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Amid the street parties, one thing became clear: with several churches but nowhere to bring the whole estate together, Micklefield needed a place to meet.
Residents began fundraising — summer fetes, Christmas bazaars, weekly bingo, and their own lottery, the “100 Club”. Years of effort caught the attention of Councillor Peter Cartwright, who persuaded the council to build on The Plateau, with residents funding the fixtures and fittings themselves.
On 30th September 1989, Cllr Peter Cartwright and local resident Elsie Jarvis officially opened Micklefield Community Centre — its logo designed by children from the local school, and still in use today.
Built by Volunteers
From day one, the centre has been run entirely by volunteers. Within five years they’d raised enough to build an extension — a stage, more storage, and a bigger bar.
One of those volunteers, Bill Wallen, gave 18 years of service before he passed in 2007. The council named a nearby road “Wallen Close” in his honour, and the Association renamed our main hall the Bill Wallen Hall. His wife carried on his work for four more years.
What We Offer Today
Today the centre hosts Zumba, table tennis, martial arts and more throughout the week, alongside the Micklefield Opportunity Centre’s daytime support service for vulnerable adults.

Community Events
Throughout the year we host Santa’s Sleigh, an annual charity bikers’ event with Micklefield’s Polish community, monthly Bingo nights, and the occasional quiz or race night — with proceeds going straight back into the centre and our local food hub.
